TRIPPER VANILLA

Botanical Names:

  • Vanilla (Vanilla Planifolia, V fragrans)
  • West Indian Vanilla (V.pompona)
  • Tahitian Vanilla (V. Tahitensis)
History:
Vanilla was brought from South America by the Spanish conquistador, Cortez. In 1520, an officer under Cortez observed the Aztec emperor Montezuma being served a drink called “chocolaty” in golden cups, a beverage prepared from pulverized seeds of the cacao tree, flavored with ground vanilla beans. Cortez bought the drink to Europe in the 1500s where the drink became popular with the nobility and the very rich throughout Europe. Hugh Morgan, a chemist for Queen Elizabeth 1, suggested Vanilla could be used alone as a flavoring and its uses and versatility expanded. Hand pollination was first used in 1836 by a Belgian and later perfected in 1841 by a Spanish slave leading to significantly increased vanilla production its widespread use.

WHAT IS A COBRA? A cobra is a venomous snake, which is a member of the family Elapidae. The name is short for cobra de capelo (or cobra di capello), which is Portuguese for "snake with hood", or"hood-snake". When disturbed, most of these snakes can rear up and spread their neck in a characteristic threat display. However, not all snakes referred to as cobras are of the same genus, or even of the same family.

WHAT IS A MACAQUE? The macaques constitute a genus of Old World monkeys of the subfamily Cercopithecinae. Aside from humans, the macaques are the most widespread primate genus, ranging from northern Africa to Japan. Twenty-two macaque species are currently recognised, and they include some of the monkeys best known to non-zoologists, such as the Rhesus Macaque, Macaca mulatta, and the Barbary Macaque, M. sylvanus, a colony of which lives on the Rock of Gibraltar. Although several species lack tails, and their common names therefore refer to them as apes, these are true monkeys, with no greater relationship to the true apes than any other Old World monkeys.

WHAT IS A FLYING FOX? Bats of the genus Pteropus, belonging to the Megachiroptera sub-order, are the largest bats in the world. They are commonly known as the Fruit Bats or Flying Foxes among other numerous colloquial names. They live in the tropics and subtropics of Asia, Australia, Indonesia, islands off East Africa, and a number of remote oceanic islands in both the Indian and Pacific Oceans.
